What is IKMF Krav Maga?
Krav Maga (meaning “combat with contact” in Hebrew) is a tactical hand-to-hand or hand-to-weapon self-defence system that is extremely effective, intuitive, and easy to learn. Unlike martial arts or combat sports, Krav Maga was created for real-world survival, focusing on instinctive movements and practical techniques anyone can apply under stress.
Origins and Purpose
Krav Maga was originally developed in Israel by Imrich "Imi" Lichtenfeld (Sde-Or), a Hungarian Jew, in the late 1930s in order to defend against anti-semitic riots and fascism. He combined the most effective techniques from various martial arts such as boxing and wrestling into a unified, practical system. It has been refined for decades on the street and battlefield, proving itself as a tool for survival, protection, and empowerment. Today, it is taught to civilians, and the top military and law enforcement organizations all over the world.
Core Principles
Krav Maga is not just about fighting — it’s about making smart, tactical decisions to avoid or end danger quickly. Training emphasizes:
-
Simplicity – techniques are based on natural, instinctive movements that are easy to learn.
-
Realism – solutions depend on circumstances: distance, environment, lighting, escape routes, and number of attackers.
-
Effective – techniques are effective against punches, kicks, grabs, chokes, knives, sticks, firearms, and multiple assailants.
-
Prevention First – awareness and avoidance are always prioritized over confrontation.
-
Empowerment – building confidence, awareness, and calm decision-making under stress to prevail against violence.

Beyond Techniques
IKMF Krav Maga isn’t simply about physical self-defence. It also develops life skills that extend far beyond the training room:
-
Confidence and self-awareness
-
Physical fitness and coordination
-
Tactical thinking and situational awareness
-
Fear management and resilience under pressure
Our training emphasizes not just how to respond, but also when to act, what options you have, and how to make the best choice in a stressful situation.
Is Krav Maga a Martial Art?
Krav Maga is not a traditional martial art. It is not a sport, nor is it practiced for performance or ritual. Instead, it was designed to strip away unnecessary complexity and focus only on what works in real life. It draws from the best of multiple martial systems but is refined into a practical, no-nonsense method of survival.
Key differences from martial arts:
-
No competition, rules, or scoring
-
Multiple attackers
-
Defending empty-handed against different types of weapons
-
Consider environmental conditions and elements to use them to our advantage
-
Practical, everyday application
-
Training in regular clothing, often with shoes
-
Emphasis on instinct and tactics, not tradition
Progression in Krav Maga
At IKMF, progression is marked by a patch-based system (instead of belts). Students advance through levels from Practitioner (5 levels) to Graduate (5 levels) to Expert (6 levels), each step representing increased skill, awareness, tactical ability to defend again different types of weapons and more attackers.
Uniform
Krav Maga prepares you for the real world, so training is done in everyday street clothing, often with shoes. You’ll learn to defend yourself in conditions similar to where real confrontations may happen.
