The Heart of Who We Are

VALUES
  1. Safety – Every person deserves to live in safety, free from violence and intimidation.

  2. Courage – We inspire people to act with confidence and courage in the face of fear.

  3. Community – Safety is a shared responsibility, built through connection and support.

  4. Education – The right knowledge and practical skills are the foundation of personal safety and lead to empowerment, confidence, and readiness.

  5. Leadership – We lead by example, modelling integrity, accountability, and service while empowering others to stand up for themselves and their communities.

MISSION

To equip individuals and communities with the skills, knowledge, and mindset to prevent, navigate, and respond to threats. Through practical self‑defence training, personal and professional safety education, and community partnerships, we foster confidence, courage, and readiness in the face of violence.

VISION

To build communities where every person feels capable, prepared and confident to face any threat, and live boldly in the face of fear. We stand for the fundamental human right to personal safety, and envision a future where everyone believes they are worthy of feeling safe and supported, and can protect themselves and in their community they are called to serve.

Leadership & Expertise

Dave Headshot
David Suffern, CPP

Director of Training & Consulting
IKMF Director of Canada

Dave Suffern, CPP, brings over three decades of frontline and leadership experience across corrections, healthcare security, public-sector environments, large-scale venues, and corporate security operations. His career spans correctional facilities, healthcare systems, school districts, major event and entertainment venues, and complex multi-site organizations—giving him a rare, end-to-end perspective on security risk, prevention, and response.

Throughout his career, Dave has conducted and overseen hundreds of threat, risk, and vulnerability assessments, particularly within high-risk and high-liability environments. As Corporate Security Manager for Edmonton Public Schools, he led a 24/7 security monitoring and specialist response function, conducting daily assessments across more than 200 facilities, advising on mitigation strategies, emergency response, and violence threat risk assessment (VTRA) principles.

Dave has held senior security leadership roles with Northlands and the Shaw Conference Centre, where he was responsible for security operations across arenas, trade shows, casinos, and major public events. In these roles, he developed and implemented CCTV, access control, vehicle patrol, and incident reporting programs, coordinated closely with bylaw enforcement and police partners, and contributed to safety committees and COR certification practices. His work in incident reporting and venue security programs was featured in Canadian Security Magazine.

Earlier in his career, Dave served as a Corrections Officer with the Alberta Solicitor General, including experience in maximum-security environments, followed by eight years as a Healthcare Special Constable with Caritas Health Group. In healthcare settings, his work focused on the protection of vulnerable persons, mental health–related incidents, and collaboration with law enforcement under multiple provincial statutes.

In parallel with his operational leadership, Dave brings over 25 years of experience in security training and professional education. As Founder of Tip of Spear, he led the development and delivery of training programs for security professionals, organizations, and individuals across Alberta. As Canadian Director for the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF), Dave has trained extensively in Israel alongside leading global protection experts and continues to support and expand IKMF’s mission throughout Canada.

Today, as Director of Training & Consulting at TalonPoint Defence, Dave applies this operational depth to help organizations clearly understand risk, strengthen security posture, and implement practical, defensible solutions. His approach is calm, methodical, and grounded in real-world execution—supporting clients from assessment through implementation.

Community Programs

We believe in giving back by creating new—and supporting existing—community initiatives like EmpowerHer and UnityWatch, programs that build confidence, safety, and leadership where they’re needed most. We’re always open to new opportunities to use our skills to serve our city, our communities, and our country in meaningful ways.

About our Brand

In nature, animals and plants develop defenses like talons, shells, thorns, or toxins to survive. Humans also have powerful tools—our bodies and minds—but they must be trained to become truly effective, which is what TalonPoint stands for.

The griffin is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As a fusion of the king of beasts and the king of birds, the griffin is said to see danger before it comes. It represents the themes of:

  1. Protection - taking care of ourselves and others who we care for

  2. Courage - ability to recognize and face danger head-on

  3. Majesty - every person is precious and worthy of protection

  4. Leadership - with power comes responsibility

  5. Wisdom - discerning when to fight/use force and when to maintain peace/use thought

Our griffin is standing at the ready, head looking back in diligence for it's safety.

Gold has long symbolized value, honor, and excellence. In our logo this reflects not only the high standards of TalonPoint’s training, but the inherent worth of every person and their right to feel safe. It also takes it one step further to represent the inner light each person is called to let shine to inspire others.
